A front door that will not lock or latch properly is more than an inconvenience. It can leave your home less secure and let drafts, water and insects in around the door.
In many cases, the lock itself is not the problem. The door, the strike plate, or the hinges may have shifted so the bolt and latch no longer line up.
1. Door and Frame Misalignment

Seasonal changes, settling of the house, and loose hinges can cause a door to drop or shift in its frame. When that happens, the latch and deadbolt may hit the strike plate instead of entering it.
Common warning signs include:
- You need to push, pull or lift the door to lock it.
- The deadbolt only turns when the door is held tight.
- The door rubs at the top corner or drags at the bottom.
- Visible scratches around the strike plate.
2. Loose or Worn Hinges
Hinge screws can loosen over time, especially on heavy entry doors. A sagging door changes the alignment of the latch side and can also cause gaps in the weatherstripping.
3. Worn or Damaged Lock Hardware
Locksets, latches and multipoint locking systems wear with use. A sticky key, a latch that does not spring back, or a handle that feels loose can all point to worn internal parts.
Do not force a key or handle that resists. Excess force can break internal components or the key itself.
4. Swollen or Damaged Door
Wood doors can swell in humid weather. Damaged edges, impact damage or a previous forced entry can also prevent the door from closing fully.
5. What Homeowners Can Check
- Look for loose hinge screws.
- Check whether the door rubs the frame anywhere.
- See whether the latch lines up with the strike plate opening.
- Make sure weatherstripping is not pushing the door away from the frame.
If the door still will not lock smoothly, a technician can adjust or replace the hinges, strike plate or lock hardware, or realign the door.
6. Repair or Replace the Front Door?
Most locking and latching problems can be solved with adjustments and hardware replacement. If the door or frame is badly damaged, warped or rotted, a new entry door may be the more practical option.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my deadbolt only lock when I push the door?
This usually means the door has shifted and the bolt is not lined up with the strike plate. Adjusting the hinges or strike plate often solves it.
Is it the lock or the door?
If the lock turns easily with the door open but not when it is closed, the problem is likely alignment rather than the lock itself.
Can a door that will not latch be repaired?
In most cases, yes. Hinge, strike plate and hardware adjustments or replacements usually restore normal latching.
